Boys Varsity Soccer vs Valley Christian

February 15, 2020

The Cate boys varsity soccer season ended in dramatic fashion Friday evening in Cerritos, as the Rams lost to Valley Christian in the final 15 seconds of play.
The Rams opened the scoring in the 6th minute when sophomore Daniel Boateng converted a penalty kick after senior Buba Fofanah got fouled in the box. The Rams held that lead until the 60th minute when Valley Christian tucked away a loose ball after senior keeper Devin Pai made the initial save on a long restart. Both teams continued to threaten, but it was Valley Christian who made good in the final minute of play when Cate was whistled for an infraction in their defensive end near the corner. Valley Christian nodded home a header off the restart that skimmed the underside of the crossbar.
Our season-ending this way is a bitter pill to swallow. This team has fought through a ton of adversity this season, and I don’t think any of us thought it would end in such heartbreaking fashion. I’m remarkably proud of these guys. They came to play every game and we had an extraordinary season by most measures. I’m just sorry that come Monday afternoon we won’t be back at it.
Our final record is 11-1-1.
