The Cate girls varsity basketball team continued its win streak on Wednesday night with a win over Frontier League opponent Providence. From the tip, the Rams came to play both offensively and defensively. The team’s half-court trap resulted in several deflections and steals that led to fast breaks and gave Cate a 22-0 lead after the first quarter. We coupled our tenacious defense with strong shooting from sophomore Meena Baher, who put up 14 points in the first quarter, and solid post play from junior Deb Brittain, sophomore Imani Oseso, and senior Maya Blattberg. The Rams continued to charge ahead in the second quarter with the offensive play of junior Lily Zanze, who had 6 points in the quarter, and the defensive play of seniors Maya Fenelon and Jess Yang, along with Baher. At the half, Cate was up 38-0.
The story of the third quarter was the strong post play of Brittain, who secured 5 rebounds and had 8 of her 12 points in the quarter. Oseso also contributed 4 steals and 6 points in the second half. The final score was 62-6.
Every member of our team contributed something in tonight’s win. Freshmen Talia Tom had multiple strong drives to the basket and ran the offense with composure. Fellow freshmen Mary Foster secured 6 rebounds and had 3 beautiful assists for layups. Senior Dana Huston-Chen played strong help-side defense, grabbed multiple rebounds, and scored a bucket in the fourth quarter. Moreover, senior Natasha Weiss, who has been recovering from an illness, had several deflections, rebounds, and assists.
The Rams are back in action next Tuesday night at 5:00PM when they face a solid La Reina team at home.
