Boys Varsity Soccer vs Laguna Blanca

January 17, 2020

The Cate boys varsity soccer team moved to 6-0-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in league play by knocking off host Laguna Blanca 4-2 in Hope Ranch Thursday afternoon. After two narrow misses in the opening minute of play, senior Buba Fofanah finished a far post pass from sophomore Daniel Boateng in the 3rd minute. Cate doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Boateng took a long pass from senior Will Anderson and tagged a volley from about 30 yards that dipped over a helpless Owl keeper and into the far upper corner. Midway through the second half, junior Will Deardorff played a through ball to Fofanah who slotted it home. Laguna tallied their first goal on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but Cate struck back in the 71st when Fofanah flicked a pass from sophomore Ricky Valente across the top of the box to Boateng who found the back right corner with his left foot. Laguna tallied their final goal five minutes before the end of the game.
We did a great job of attacking Laguna with near relentless pressure in the attacking third and racing out to an early lead. Unfortunately, we stagnated for long stretches, accentuated by holding the ball too long and not always playing with the kind of urgency that generally helps us control the game. Still, we did enough well to earn a good win over a good team. I’m proud of how far we’ve come and excited about how far I think we can go.
Midway through our league schedule, we sit in first place. Our next match is here on the Mesa on Tuesday against Foothill Tech at 3:30p.
