Boys Varsity Soccer vs Foothill Tech

January 22, 2020

The Cate boys varsity soccer team moved to 7-0-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in league play by defeating visiting Foothill Tech 4-3 Tuesday afternoon. The Rams opened the scoring in the 1st minute when senior Buba Fofanah played a perfect through ball to sophomore Daniel Boateng, who slotted it past the Dragons keeper. But Foothill equalized 12 minutes later when a routine shot from distance took an unlucky deflection off a Ram defender. The Rams regained the lead in the 28th minute when Boateng nodded home a Fofanah free-kick. Cate extended their lead in the 55th minute when sophomore Ricky Valente played a long ball to Fofanah, who dribbled in and slotted it home. But the Rams couldn’t make their 3-1 lead stick and Foothill scored in the 62nd and 67th minutes to knot the game at 3-3. But in the final minute of play, junior Will Deardorff chipped a beautiful short pass to Fofanah at the top of the box, where he controlled it, turned, and found the back of the net.
It was one of those days when we had a hard time finding any consistency as a team. We scored some beautiful goals through incredible individual efforts, but we lacked our characteristic cohesiveness in most areas of the field. And a team as technically sound as Foothill Tech will take advantage of mistakes and miscues. We certainly weren’t as sharp as we normally are, but we worked hard and I suspect we’ll rebound when we take on Santa Clara next Tuesday in Oxnard. That game will begin at 2:30.
