This Week in Sports

November 8, 2019

Daylight savings has passed, bringing with it shorter days and winter sports to the Mesa. The painted lines on fields have been widened and rectangular goals constructed at each end. The nets which once occupied the middle of the gym floor have been replaced with those that hang from the ceiling. Even with all these changes, there are still a few constants that remain.

The football team suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the Toads this past week to conclude the end of their regular season, but with every defeat comes a chance to get back up. The Rams will look to make a run through the Div. 1 8-man playoffs starting with a home game this Saturday, November 9th against Calvary Chapel/Downey. Kick-off for that contest will be at 1:30 p.m.

The cross country team continues to impress. They most recently ran in the Santa Barbara Championships with the girls taking second place—the highest finish ever by a Cate girls team at that event. That was not the only “first ever” on the day, as sophomore co-captain Anna DiSorbo became the first Cate girls runner to be crowned county champion. The boys team finished eighth on the day with senior co-captain Tesfa Asmara leading the Rams. He finished as the eleventh fastest runner in the county. Up next for the Rams: League Finals, where the team hopes to set even more records on an already incredible season.

The girls tennis season unfortunately came to an end on Wednesday, as the team lost 10-8 in a hard fought match against Calabasas High School. Although the team’s season has come to an end, two members, seniors Grace Fuss and Carol Cai, will compete in the CIF-SS doubles tournament. Grace, who normally plays in singles, and Carol, who has played all season with a different partner, have decided to team up in hopes of making one final run at a sectional championship. Good luck to both of them.

As has become the norm during this fall season, we want to acknowledge another individual accomplishment of one of our own. Grace Blankenhorn ’20 capped an incredible four-year career by being recognized as the Most Valuable Player for volleyball in the Tri-Valley League. Congratulations, Grace!
