The Week in Sports

November 8, 2018

The Cate football team currently sits at 9-0 and will take on Windward in the CIFss Quarter Finals soon. The Rams closed out the regular season by knocking off the top team in division 2, Hesperia Christian, 55-12 over Fall Family Weekend and a week later squashed rival Thacher 68-30 in Ojai. It’s the fourth time in the program’s 14 year history the team finished the regular season undefeated. The Rams also finished the year as the #1 ranked team in the CIF Southern Section and, according to maxpreps.com, the #1 in the state.

The top-seeded Rams opened up the playoffs in a home game down the road at Carpinteria High School under the lights of Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. The Rams marched right past the visiting Desert Christian Knights in that game by an 89-15 score. The success of the squad has been a full team effort. Players like Jack Deardorff ’19, Drew Anastasio ’19, William Deardorff ’20, and Thomas Nettesheim ’20 have made a huge impact for the team, as has Scott Holmes ’20, Will Anderson ’20, Khadim Pouye ’20, Dalton Phillips ’20, and Callum Casey ’20.

The girls tennis team suffered just one blemish during the regular season, dropping the final regular-season contest to powerhouse San Marcos High School in a battle of the top two teams in the Santa Barbara area. The Rams finished the regular season 12-1 and earned a playoff home game in the first round, where they fell to Mira Costa, one of the top teams in all of California. For a few of the Rams, the season will continue in CIFss individual play. Cate will send two doubles teams to the CIFss Individual Tournament, as the Rams took both first and second in the league tournament. Grace Fuss ’20 and Carol Cai ’20 won the league individual tournament, knocking off teammates Sarah Polowczak ’19 and Fritzie Mayer ’21. Jennifer Soh ’19, Kate Tunnell ’19, and Sydney Burton ’19 wrapped up their Cate tennis careers this season, but will no doubt left their mark on an impressive team.

The running Rams of the cross country team closed their regular season with an impressive finish at the league finals in Ojai. Tesfa Asmara ’20, Josh Shields ’19, Abner Olivares ’19, Israel Sanchez ’19, Nick Patrick ’22, and Shion Kato ’21 put together one of their best races of the year and finished 4th in league, which qualified the boys side for a spot in the CIFss Championship Prelims. The girls team missed out on qualifying for the prelims by one spot, finishing 5th in the race. While the team won’t be moving on, one Ram will. Anna DiSorbo ’22 finished 3rd overall in the race with a time of 19:35 clinched her a spot in the prelims as well as all-league honors. The championship prelim race will take place in Riverside on Saturday, November 10.

The Cate girls volleyball ended their regular season undefeated in league and earned a home game in the first round of the CIFss playoffs, where they knocked off Rosemead in three sets. After going on the road to beat Mary Star of the Sea High School in the second round, the team hit the road to take on the top-seeded Linfield Christian in the quarterfinals. The Rams gave the division’s top team all they could handle but fell in 5 sets to the eventual CIFss Division 7 champion. The Rams will lose seniors Georgia Douglas ’19 and Katie Browne ’19, but with just two seniors on the roster, the cupboard is far from empty.
