Baseball vs Foothill Tech

May 11, 2018

The Cate baseball team dropped its league opener in Ventura on Wednesday, April 11, as the Rams fell to the Foothill Dragons 5-2. Cate moves to 4-2 on the year and 0-1 in Frontier League play.
The Rams struggled to get any offense going on the day. The heavy fastball from Foothill’s starter made it hard for Cate to make solid contact. Ethan Cassulo ’19 had the best day for the Rams, going 2-2 with two singles and an RBI. The catcher also walked twice. William Deardorff ’21 had Cate‘s only extra-base hit with an RBI double. Scott Holmes ’20, Daniel Panadero ’21, and Jack Deardorff ’19 each had a hit for Cate.
Dalton Phillips ’20 picks up his first loss of the year. The right-hander had some struggles with command on the day but was able to turn in a solid, 5 inning outing for Cate giving up 4 runs while striking out three. Patrick Armstrong ’18 turned in a fine performance in one inning of work. Scott Holmes ’20 played great defense for Cate, flashing the leather at third base, while Emily Burns ’18 made some solid plays also.
“We had a tough time getting into an offensive rhythm today. Credit to Foothill for making every play they needed to make. They are a great team and we just were outplayed today. We hope to learn from our mistakes and come back later on this week with a different outcome,” says Cate coach Dave Soto ’08.
