2018 Denison Cup Brings Lacrosse Alumni Back to Campus

May 14, 2018

On Saturday, May 12, the boys varsity lacrosse team played in the third annual Denison Cup, (42nd annual alumni vs varsity game), against the alumni team. The alumni team was trying to pick up their second straight win after dropping the first one in 2016. While the varsity team only had thirteen players, the alumni showed up with a whopping 23 players. It looked promising for the varsity boys as they won the opening faceoff (senior Luke Beckman vs Pierce Lundt ’17) and quickly scored with an unassisted goal from senior Will Bowlin.

The alumni just needed a wakeup call as they went on a run of four unanswered goals (two from Kienan McCarthy, one from Alex Mast ’94, and one from Mackie Greason ’11). Junior Adlai Hester took the ball coast to coast and had a quick goal in response. However, Kienan McCarthy did not want the spotlight off him as 50 seconds later, he scored again. In the second quarter, the alumni team, especially the Greason brothers, Mackie and Wesley, continued to enjoy scoring and assisting as they had another three goals and were the scorers or the assisters on all three (two goals by Wesley ’13, and one by Mackie ’11). The varsity team struggled this quarter as they only had four shots and five ground balls. In the third quarter, we saw a defensive battle with each team only scoring one goal (sophomore Will Anderson from senior Caden Cutter, and Hayden Fulstone ’06 from Wesley Greason). In the closing quarter, Mackie Greason, after hearing constant chants form the varsity bench of “Mackie does not have a left hand!” scored unassisted with his left hand. To close out the game, Wesley Greason would not let his brother be the last to score as he finished off the game with an unassisted “right-handed” goal. The final score was 11-3 with the alumni team taking their second straight victory. Shoutout to Kyle Jones, even after his Philidelphia 76ers lost in the NBA playoffs, for keeping both teams safe and had some action with two injuries.
