Boys JV Basketball vs Grace Brethren

February 6, 2018

The Cate Boys JV basketball team continues to improve with an impressive 62-34 home win against Grace Brethren on Friday, January 26.  The Rams jumped all over the Lancers from the opening tip with full-court pressure and great energy, scoring the first 9 points of the game en route to a 25-5 first-quarter lead that ballooned to 42-13 lead at intermission. Tea Umukoro ’21 was on fire with 13 first-quarter points along with Nkemka Chuwumerije’s ’21 10-point burst, both players scoring off of fast breaks, steals, and acrobatic drives.  Each finished with 16 to lead Cate.

All fourteen healthy Rams saw considerable action with 11 players scoring as the two teams played evenly in the second half, fighting off a comeback attempt by Grace Brethren. McCarthy Willett ’19 hit for 7, Simon Burke ’20 scored 6, James Marin ’21 and Chris Tarafa ’20 scored 4 each, Daniel Pander ’21 nailed a three-pointer, Parker May ’20 and AJ Oke ’21 each had a basket and Ethan Ha ’20 and Michael Armstrong ’21 hit a free throw each for a very balanced team effort.  Also contributing were Alexander Kim ’20, Anthony DuPrau ’19, and Jasper Bennett ’21.

The team’s record is now 5-1 but is currently without its leading scorer, Ethan Ng ’20, due to an ankle injury. The team will continue league play on Wednesday, February 1 with the home edition of the rivalry game with Thacher.
