Football vs Upland Christian

After a frustrating league loss last week to Villanova, the Cate varsity football team bounced back with a solid 34-20 victory over the #7 ranked Upland Christian Academy Eagles on Saturday, October 21. The win pushes Cate’s record to 4-3.

In an 8-man football rarity, the two sides held each other scoreless in the first quarter. Good defensive plays from Dalton Phillips ’20 and Will Bowlin ’18 kept the Eagles scoreless in that first frame. The visiting Eagles got the scoring started with about 9 minutes left in the second quarter. Cate responded on a 2-yard touchdown run from Jack Deardorff ’19 to go ahead 7-6. After another Upland Christian score, Cate found the end zone again on a 13-yard run from Drew Anastasio ’19. Cate scored just before the half on a 25-yard pitch-and-catch from Deardorff ’19 to Bowlin ’18 and the Rams led 20-12 at the break.
The lone third-quarter score came on the defense end for Cate. Patrick Armstrong picked off an Eagles pass and returned it 50 yards to the house. In the fourth quarter, Anastasio ’19 pounded the ball in from 14 yards out. The Eagles would score once more but wouldn’t get any closer.
The Cate defense was stellar. The Rams caused four turnovers on the day, including two interceptions from Armstrong ’18. Bowling ’18 and Phillips ’20 also had picks. Desmond Castillo ’18, Cal Sinclair ’19, and Andy McHarg ’18 were great in coverage against a talented Upland Christian passing attack. Carson Williams ’19 and Chris Bennett ’18 played great up front and put the Eagles under pressure all afternoon.
“This was a great game for us. We had plenty of questions about ourselves and we answered a lot of them today. We played hard against a talented team and I hope we don’t forget how talented we can be. I’m proud of the effort from our guys,” said Cate Assistant Coach Dave Soto.
The Rams will move into rivalry week, as they welcome the Thacher Toads to town on Saturday, October 28. Kick off for that game will be 2 pm.

Boys Varsity Water Polo vs Foothill

The Rams hosted the Foothill Tech Dragons on Wednesday, October 18 in a well-fought nail-biter during their final face-off of the 2017 season. The Dragons managed to make their splash defeating Cate 10-6, bringing the Rams to a 3-7 record in Tri-Valley League play.

The action began quickly as junior Sebastian Sak ’19 opened the first quarter scoring with a powerful outside skip shot to give the Rams momentum. However, the Rams’ luck quickly changed as multiple power-play opportunities were awarded to Foothill Tech, affording them a one-goal lead by the end of the first period. Action continued with scoring by both teams, including the two goals apiece from senior Parker Matthews ’18 and sophomore Peter Bulkley-Armas ’20, keeping Cate within one headed into the final period. Thanks to some athletics offensive plays, the Dragons managed to keep the edge prior to the fourth quarter start.
Competitive spirits remained high throughout the fourth period with multiple successful strikes from Foothill. Cate battled tough as they watched Foothill Tech pull away sealing the 4-goal lead with 19 seconds to go in the match.
“Though not victorious, we can expect our Rams will persist with a collective and positive mental attitude,” said Cate Head Coach Max Bergeson.
