Girls Varsity Tennis vs Carpinteria

Cate’s girls varsity tennis team took down cross-town rival Carpinteria on Wednesday, September 20. The Rams mixed up their typical lineup in the contest, but showed no signs of slowing down as they beat the Warriors 17-1.
“I’m very pleased with the start we’ve had to this season. Today we started with three new doubles pairings that all had some success. It’s a real luxury to be able to play around with different lineups and a testament to the versatility of the players I get to work with,” said Cate Head Coach Trevor Thorpe.
“I was particularly pleased with the way Sydney Burton ’19 played at #2 singles. She worked hard on her game in the off-season and she’s growing into a bigger role on the team,” Thorpe added.
Fritze Mayer ’21, the team’s lone freshman, also played some great tennis today with Jackie Cai ’18 to sweep at the #1 doubles spot.
Thorpe also praised Maki Kobayashi ’18 and Piper Brooks ’20 for being ready to substitute into the doubles lineup and Jennifer Soh ’19 for taking on a third-round singles match. “All three made the most of their opportunity to play and came out with wins, meaning every varsity player scored a set win. This is the third time in five matches we’ve managed that feat,” said Thorpe.
The Rams will take on another rival on Tuesday, September 26 when they head to Ojai to take on the Thacher Toads. That contest will start at 3:30 pm.

Boys Varsity Water Polo vs Nordhoff

The Cate boys Varsity water polo team played a close match against the Nordhoff High School Rangers Wednesday, September 20 falling by a score of 9-5.

Both teams came out of strong, showing active defense and effective communication, resulting in an early lead for the Rangers through half of the first period. Nordhoff was first to score, striking for two goals near the end of the first frame. With just over a minute to go, Sebastian Sak ’19 found the net for the Rams to make it a one-goal game at the first intermission. The second quarter action started with Sebastian burying an outside shot to even the score at two goals apiece. As both teams made stops on defense and capitalized in transition, Sebastian netted his third goal of the game with 5:09 to play, followed by an outside shot from Peter Bulkley Armas ’20 to enter halftime with a 4-4 draw.
Rams goalkeeper Cullen Barber played exceptionally, anchoring the defense with 13 saves and 4 steals throughout the contest. After entering the final quarter down two goals, the Rams remained consistent on the defensive end, but ultimately came up shy on offense, falling by a final score of 9-5.
“The guys played hard for four quarters and executed the game plan well. Aside from a couple minutes at the beginning and end of the game, they played together and elevated their level of play each quarter. Game to game we’ve done well to eliminate mistakes and tie concepts together as a team. They’ve been working hard and the results are really starting to show early in the season,” said Cate Head Coach Max Bergeson.
The Rams, now 1-2 overall (0-2 league) look to improve to a .500 record in an away game against Foothill Technology on Friday, September 22 at 3:15 pm.
