Cate Squash in Santa Barbara School of Squash Tournament @ UCLA

January 23, 2017

Nine Cate squash players competed in the Santa Barbara School of Squash junior tournament held at UCLA on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22.

The tournament was comprised of 60 high school-aged students, mostly from Southern California. The Rams were led by the McFarlane brothers, Ian ’17 and Dylan ’20.

Ian McFarlane entered the U17 unseeded, but that did not stop him from marching through the draw, dropping only one game in the process. Younger brother Dylan McFarlane was the first seed in the U15 and acted accordingly, dropping only one game on his run to the title.

Alex Kim ’20 won the U15 consolation round.

Kate Bradley ’19, Mark Huerta ’20, Simon Parker ’18, Kenneth Liou ’20, Carlos Rosario ’20, and Stefan Suh ’19 all also enjoyed the nerves, elation, and fatigue of tournament play.

The tournament was hosted by the Santa Barbara School of Squash (SBSOS), a non-profit that provides access to squash and tutoring for kids who might not otherwise afford it. On Saturday, January 21 the SBSOS held a pro-am doubles tournament to raise money for the organization. The pros were LA’s best players and the amateurs were the SBSOS kids.

“This was a very cool and fun event that will be the first of many,” said Cate Head Coach Tim Thomas.
