| Senior Marguerite Mannix was one of the members of an art relay team. |
The annual Art Relay offer students in all the arts disciplines an opportunity to collaborate in a focused, creative undertaking. For the event, nominated student artists in all media are divided into teams whose leadoff member receives a single verbal prompt; each leader responds by creating an artwork embodying his or her imaginative response to that prompt.
This year the two-week Art Relay, recently concluded, involved four teams of eight students—Cate's most talented young artists. The first student on each team was given a "trigger" word to use an inspiration for a piece of artwork. That student had 24 hours to create their piece and was excluded from all Cate commitments to do so. The next participant on that team was only able to view the artwork of the student before them, not the original trigger word, and had 24 hours to create their piece using inspiration from the previous student's work. This continued until all team members had created a piece.
This year's trigger words, which students and Art Department Chair Patrick Collins conceived together, were "gaggling," "lollipop," "cmyk," and "splice."
The results, are now on display in the Bruno Gallery. For those unable to make it to the Mesa, a slideshow is posted below.
