Six times a year in assembly, math teacher Tim Smith leads the Cate community in a rousing math-themed chant, encouraging students to embrace their love of math and participate in the Cal Math League contest. Students then stay after assembly to take a six-question quiz testing their math knowledge. The final results are in! Cate was ranked first in Santa Barbara County and tied for 15th in the state overall. Cate senior Jaemin Cheun not only took first place at Cate (his third year in a row), but was once again ranked in the state poll, missing only two questions all year. At Cate, Blake Mackall '12 and Howon Byun '14 came in next, with Thanh-Liem Huynh Tran '12 taking forth, and Steven Blasberg '12 taking fifth.
Smith explains the importance of these contests at Cate, "Cal Math League gives opportunities for everyone to participate and experience math outside the classroom. Cate is a place unlike most others—students are free to pursue their passions." And for many Cate students—that passion is clearly math!
