On Saturday, March 31, the Cate Rams faced off against Chaminade Prep on Tucker Field. Coming off a defeat the previous Wednesday in which the team did not play a complete 48 minutes, the boys were determined to put together a full effort against Chaminade. After falling behind 1-0, Matthew Firestone '14 scored twice in 32 seconds to put Cate on the board. The opposition recovered, scoring two two goals to close out a fast paced first quarter, taking a 3-2 lead. Early in the second, an extra man opportunity gave Cate's leading scorer Kyle Mayfield '13 a window to skip a pass to freshman Kenneth Macdonald '15 who rifled a shot past the Chaminade goalie for the first goal of his Cate career. Austin Gallegos '13 followed that tally up at 8:50 of the second quarter, putting the Rams up 4-3. Chaminade would not go away quietly, using two powerful midfielders who used their size and strength to get to the middle of the field and score twice, taking a lead of 5-4. Thanks to another extra man opportunity with just over three minutes to play in the second quarter, Gallegos used a beautiful box fake to freeze the Chaminade defenders and find a wide open Firestone on the crease who buried his third of the day to tie the game at five a piece. This goal started a three goal run by Cate to close the half. Both Mayfield and Gallegos found the back of the net to give the Rams a 7-5 lead at halftime.
After an early third quarter goal by Chaminade to close the gap to 7-6 in favor of Cate, the Rams pulled away. Gallegos assisted on three goals in the third quarter: one by senior captain Edward Hawkins '12, Mayfield's second of the day, and Firestone's fourth. At 10-6, the Rams were determined to finish off Chaminade. An early fourth quarter goal by Mayfield gave way for the Rams to close out the victory using ball possession in the final minutes of the game.
