Freshman Research Skills

The aim of the library’s Research Skills courses or projects is to teach students to teach themselves.

We prepare students to do meaningful research for their classes at Cate, as well as to give them a sense of the research expectations of college students.

In the Freshman Research Skills course, students will learn how to use valuable print and digital resources in the library; how to correctly cite sources using RefWorks and how to create lists of works cited; students will discuss issues of academic honesty and plagiarism, as well as the ethical use of the internet. They will become more effective searchers using appropriate keywords and other strategies, as well as learning to evaluate print and digital sources for currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy, and purpose.
