Sarah: In many ways, we are evidence that opposites attract.
Emma: To begin, I had never before met anyone my own age from the East Coast. I was not aware of the “casual polo” , and I had absolutely no idea what sperry top-siders were. Then I met Sarah, and she enlightened me. Her east coast mentality and Lily Pullitzer wardrobe opened my eyes freshman year. She introduced me to Nantucket reds and teenage boys wearing seersucker shorts adorned with lobsters and anchors. What a baffling concept.
Sarah: Before coming to Cate, I did not know a single Los Angelite. I was shocked to see no sign of Lily Pulitzer or J Crew in her closet. I should have figured since 90% of her outfits are distinctively grey and black, but I just couldn’t believe it. She also seemed to have never heard of weather other than sunshine or the occasional foggy day. Rainy days on the mesa have always been an issue for her, but thankfully last year, Emma purchased her first rain jacket. However, she’s still working up to buying some rain boots.
Emma: Furthermore confusing for my 15-year-old self, was how I managed to be at least 10 shades paler than Sarah, although I have lived in sunny California my whole life, while she endured snow for a third of the year. However, when I learned of her disbelief in sunscreen, it was explained.
Sarah: On our first free day freshman year, I discovered how differently Emma and I handle the sun. I have a well-thought out bronzing technique entailing lathering myself in maui babe, in addition to as many tanning oils as are available. So, naturally, when we went to the pool on our sunny free day, I offered Emma some tanning oil. She politely declined my offer, and proceeded to cover herself with a shaul and a towel, to insure as little sun exposure as possible.
Emma: On another note, Sarah has a definite presence in the dorm. Bothin walls are notoriously thin, so from downstairs I can hear her laugh. Her distinctive voice traveled through the halls of Long House as well; I have fond memories of hearing her sing bad 90s one hit wonders, like the soundtrack from A walk to Remember, loud and clear. As the years have progressed, she has been listening to more techno, with some dub step mixed in. To this day, I do not understand the concept of this music that frequently induces headaches for me at Cate Raves, but, whatever floats her boat.
Sarah: Since freshman year, it has been clear that we have different tastes in music. Emma cringes at the sound of Justin Beiber’s “One Time” and walks out of the room when I play Taylor Swift. If you were to look through her itunes library at the genres, you would see no sign of “Hip Hop” “Dance” “Techno” “Rap” or “Dub Step”. “Mellow” would accurately describe Emma’s iTunes library, and presence in general.
Emma: So some may question how we became such good friends. We do have some similarities, for example, we both have large feet, an affinity for Starbucks skinny vanilla lattes, and an interest in mountain men with beards. And we even share a love for Elton John.
Sarah: So here it goes, we’ve wanted to do this since freshman year. Enjoy.
Sarah: It's a little bit funny, Emma, this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but girl if I did
I'd buy the bothin double where we both could live
Emma: You know, If I was a sculptor,
perhaps like Daniel Mock,
but then again, no
Or a woman who makes potions, like Cece, in the chemistry show
I know it's not much, Sarah, but it's the best I can do
My gift is this song and this one's for you
Sarah: And you can tell the whole student body this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
Emma: I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put into rhyme
How wonderful life is with you as my partner in crime
Sarah: I sat in the McBean on an n-week Friday night,
There sat my college supplements, but I just didn’t have the might.
Emma: Knowing that I needed some moral support, and you may too,
I wrote this Tuesday talk, to share my love for you.
Sarah: So excuse their forgetting but these things they do
You see freshman year, the faculty forgot who was who
Emma: Anyway the thing is what they really mean
That we’re almost always together, so it’s not that obscene.
Sarah: And you can tell everybody this is your song
Because I know our friendship will never go wrong
Emma: I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How truly awful it would have been without you in my world.
Sarah and Emma:
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
