McBean Library

The library is a vital part of the academic program at Cate School. We strive to make certain that opportunities will be made available for students, faculty, and staff to become effective users of ideas and information and to acquire lifelong patterns of learning. We are dedicated to building a collection made up of accurate, up-to-date materials that represents a balanced point of view, to making the collection meet the requirements of all curricular areas, and to meeting the wide-ranging recreational needs of the school and boarding community.

The libraries are open daily 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and staffed Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mon-Thu 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturdays when school is in session 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

The McBean Library won ALA and AIA awards for its design when it was built in 1966. It is our main library, now housing 25,000 volumes of books and 135 periodicals in print and microfiche. 300 full-text magazines and newspapers are available online through ProQuest Direct, one of the library's 12 online databases. Audio-visual materials in a variety of formats circulate to students and members of the faculty and staff. All floors of the library offer wireless access and have been cabled to the Cate School Network; we also offer computers that provide access to  our electronic resources.  The McBean Library also houses the Cate Archives and the Hooker Gallery.

The Johnson Library

The Johnson Library, with its fireplace, oak paneling, and the 2000 volumes in its special collections provides a welcoming, quiet place to study and to read for pleasure.
