Dear Alumni,

Second semester starts this week and the Class of '12 prepares for its final months on the Mesa. As Cate's young leaders receive college acceptance letters and choose between various spring electives, they will surely think back on the great times spent at Cate and hopefully cherish the moments in the months ahead. I can't imagine an early evening in the upcoming weeks where Sunset Bench or the steps outside High House won't be occupied with laughter and excitement.

As students finished up the first semester, our alumni were busy this January. In Washington, D.C., Katie Dooley '03 gathered alumni and friends for a Servons event at Food & Friends. In San Francisco, over 100 alumni gathered for the annual reception at the St. Francis Yacht Club. And on the Mesa, alumni met on the Kirby Quandrangle to begin an evening of celebration marking the successful end to the Centennial Campaign. It was a pleasure seeing so many Cate alumni this month!

As we look ahead toward spring, please consider calling into one of our alumni conference calls. On February 1, the Alumni Leadership Council will be discussing the upcoming Alumni Weekend and on February 21, Reunion Chairs are invited to call in and discuss this June's Camp Cate.

Please remember that now is the time for Class Notes to be sent in!   The Cate community would love to hear from you!

Surpassing a Goal
With final accounting recently completed, Cate has announced the successful conclusion of its $65 million Centennial Campaign. The campaign, launched publicly in October 2007 in anticipation the School's celebration of its 100th year, exceeded its goal, raising a total of $65,343,065 in support of new facilities, operations, and endowment. The most successful fundraising effort ever undertaken by the School, the campaign officially ended on December 31st, 2011. Read more.

Giving Voice to Poetry
As part of the campus celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Cate community welcomed spoken word poets Sarah Kay and Phillip Kaye. Kay and Kaye, despite similarities, are not related, but have much in common. Read more.

Wade Ransom
Wade's Sports Update
The boys soccer team continues to do well with recent victories over Midland and Coast Union. The boys basketball team also defeated Midland last weekend with a final score of 75-53. The girls basketball team took on powerhouse Santa Clara last weekend, but despite a gallant effort, unfortunately, came up a bit short. The girls soccer team has also done well recently with wins against both Laguna Blanca and Thacher.

Cal Math League
Each month, Cate students compete in the California Mathematics League, a challenging competition for schools in the state. Not surprisingly, Cate currently sits close to the top of the leaderboard, only a few points out of 1st place. In honor of Cate's Math League success, it's time to dust off the #2 pencil and try out your math skills on this tricky question:

Cate Math League January Challenge:

All 26 letters of the English alphabet were evenly spaced alphabetically on a circular road. A rabbit hopped on the circular road at A and continued hopping, skipping 2 letters at a time, so that the next 3 letters to which it hopped were D, G, and J. If the rabbit stopped hopping the first time it had hopped to every letter once, then at what letter did the rabbit stop hopping?

Good luck!
