Certain gifts made to Cate help preserve and enhance the facilities on the Mesa. While a portion of annual Cate Fund gifts are expended every year in the maintenance and upkeep of existing facilities, there are periods in the history of the School when the board of trustees, guided by a thoughtful long-range planning process, recommends that the School build upon and improve its physical plant and infrastructure. These improvements are funded through periodic capital campaigns during which alumni, parents, and other friends of the School are invited to make contributions to the Mesa itself.
Excellent facilities not only attract quality-seeking faculty and applicants, they also help teachers and students to do their best work once they're here. While we preserve and cherish historic buildings, changing curricula and technologies require new buildings and renovations. These improvements better serve the compelling and ever-expanding human activities—intellectual, social, artistic, and athletic—that make Cate such an extraordinary school.
Outright gifts of cash or stock can be given to fund capital improvements on the Mesa. Pledges to complete funding can be made over several years. If a capital pledge is established through a multi-year commitment, the terms of the pledge, including the timing of pledge payments and a confirmation of gift designation must be outlined in a Letter of Intent. Planned gifts may also fund building, through a variety of vehicles.
Stewardship of capital gifts is important to Cate. Donors and their designated stewardship contacts receive letters of thanks and recognition in School publications. In some cases, major donors are recognized by name on the facilities themselves through gifts termed Naming Opportunities.
Cate is at present engaged in a $65 million Centennial Campaign. For more information, please look through the Centennial Case Statement. Centennial capital projects include faculty housing, restoration and renovation of the historic Stables, environmentally progressive infrastructure changes including an underground tertiary wastewater treatment plant, and a new Aquatic Center.
