The Mathematics Department at Cate encourages students to be confident and competent mathematicians, and, as a result, better thinkers. The coursework is designed to prepare students for tasks in their lives in which they will be using mathematics or be required to think mathematically. Teachers use technology as a teaching tool to make math more relevant, more visual and more fun. Students get actively involved in their class work by working in groups, competing in contests, working on the board, engaging in math activities, and making presentations. Students are required to take one course per year through the junior year, with the final course determined by the initial Cate entry level.
For the last 25 years, Cate has been a leader in local California Mathematics League competitions, winning many county titles and finishing among the top schools in California. Last year, over 150 students and faculty participated - more than half of the School. Students also compete in the Westmont College Mathematics Contest and the American High School Mathematics Contest each winter.

“We have supportive teachers in the department who are willing and committed to helping students outside of class, either in classrooms, or while on duty at night and in their homes. We know that many students need encouragement and extra help.”
