(0.5 unit/semester, Year)
These courses continue to develop the skills introduced in Level I, with considerable focus on grammar and vocabulary. Besides continued refinement of speaking and listening skills, these courses teach students how to write concise, well-organized compositions. Students in Spanish and French begin to read literature in preparation for the third-year courses.
French, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese
(0.5 unit/semester, Year)
These are intermediate courses in which students are able to refine and apply the skills acquired in the first two years. Students are required to make numerous oral presentations and participate in daily class discussions; in addition, students read increasingly sophisticated literary works and write more fully developed essays. There is also a section of Foreign Language III Honors in Spanish.
