Senior Lauren Lokre’s was awarded national Silver key for the painting that she submitted in the Scholastic Art Awards.

The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony has it’s final concert this Sunday. All seven of our Cate student members will be performing, and cellist Luca Kim ’19 has the honor of being the featured soloist. The performance is on May 21 at 4 p.m. at Lobero Theatre.

On Saturday, May 20, students will perform with a collaboration between Santa Barbara Opera and Ojai Youth Opera to present Hans Krása’s Brundibár at 2:30 and 5:00 p.m. at the Lobero.

The Cate School Big Band will be performing at the Santa Barbara High School Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 20. It will the groups first judged event. The band will play alongside some amazing bands from the region.

This week marked the end of the Foundation Arts course. This year each student spent the final five weeks on a project of their own. Projects were finished on Friday and will fill the gallery next week.

Students in the Music Business class were visited on Friday, May 12, by Adam Topol ’85, a Cate alum. Adam is an independent composer, musician, record producer, and drummer with Jack Johnson. He shared his insights on the touring and recording business in L.A. He also shared his passion for Afro-Cuban music by leading a workshop on Cuban rhythms.

Congrats to all of the musical performers over Family Weekend. Over 200 students shared their talents in the spring musical, jazz bands, chorale, Camerata, orchestra and rock bands. Thanks to all for the great musicality and positive energy!

Instrumental Music Director John Knecht’s band Sofar Sonear recorded an album in Cate’s own Stick Man Studios (in the theater), and the album was picked up by a small Italian record label this year called Jazz Tone Records. Check it out on Spotify and Amazon Music.

Grace Sahani ’17 received the Phil Irwin ’68 Photography Exhibition Award, selected by Fred Bradley ’68 based on the excellence of her work exhibited in the spring show in the Bruno Gallery.

Lauren Lokre ’17 received a national Silver Key for her entry in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. With this level of recognition, Lauren was placed among the top 1% of the 330,000 talented and serious participants of this longstanding, major arts competition for secondary school students nationwide.
