Boys Varsity Volleyball vs Carpinteria

March 3, 2017

Cate’s boys varsity volleyball team displayed a lot of character in their second league match against Carpinteria on Thursday, March 2. While the Rams dropped the contest in five sets, the experience they gained will help them in the long run.

In the first set, the Rams struggled with passing and the ability to side out which led to a 25-10 loss. Cate settled and rebounded in the second set but the relentless attack of the Warriors was a bit too much for the Ram defense, causing a 25-19 loss. Facing being swept, Cate came alive to capture sets three and four (25-23, 25-23) which pushed the match into a deciding fifth set. A slow start by the Rams allowed Carpinteria to produce a comfortable lead and eventually capture the match.

Theo Mack ’20 led the team with nineteen kills and Cullen Barber ’19 followed up with nine kills. The stellar passing (2.30+ Avg) by Mack ’20, Barber ’19 and Cooper Mayer ’17 enabled the team to run an effective offense. Carson Williams ’19 had a stellar night at the net and tallied four solo blocks and two assists.

“It was great to see the team stay poised and come back with great tenacity. The match set the bar for the season and we look forward to playing Carpinteria in the second round of league,” said Cate Head Coach Greg Novak.
