Boys Varsity Soccer vs Grace Brethren

February 13, 2017

The Cate boys varsity soccer team closed out its season with a frustrating 4-2 loss to Grace Brethren at a neutral site on Thursday, February 9. In typical fashion, the Rams got on the board first when Buba Fofanah ’20 finished a beautiful far post pass from captain Christian Herman ’17 in the ninth minute. The Rams took that lead into the break, but Grace Brethren scored in the 41st minute to equalize. Just a minute later, Herman gave the Rams the lead again on a penalty kick. Play see-sawed back and forth for the next sixteen minutes until Grace Brethren equalized again in the 58th minute. Seven minutes later they scored the game winner, before tallying a final goal in the last minute of the game.

“I was really proud of the way our guys worked today. The goals we gave up weren’t lazy ones. Grace Brethren simply scored a couple of beautiful goals and we just couldn’t quite respond down the stretch, although we had some near misses,” said Cate Head Coach Pete Mack of his team’s performance.

“It’s been a frustrating season in some ways. We’ve scored first in almost every league match, but we just haven’t been able to sustain the kind of pressure or defensive posture we’ve needed to close out games. On the flip side, our improvement and team cohesion grew by leaps and bounds. At the end of the day, our guys left everything on the field, and that’s all we can ask as coaches,” Mack added.

The Rams were led by captains–Ryan Borchardt ’17, Christian Herman ’17, and Ben Jessup ’18.

“Our younger players will be all the better next year for having played alongside these guys,” said Mack.
