The Week in Sports

January 13, 2017

Greetings and a Happy New Year from the soggy, green fields of the Mesa. We have had the good fortune of dodging raindrops since returning from break and starting the league portion of the winter season. The Coastal View News/Foster’s Freeze Athletes of the Week for the first week in January were Christian Herman ’17 (boys soccer) and Elle Smith ’19 (girls basketball)

The girls water polo team picked up two huge wins this week, defeating Carpinteria in an epic crosstown showdown, by a score of 3-2. Jazmin Estevez-Rosas ‘18 was amazing in goal holding the Warrior offense at bay in a rainy afternoon. The team travelled to Santa Maria yesterday and came away victorious with a huge win over the Saints. The girls take on Hueneme at home on Tuesday at the Emmett Horowitz Aquatic Center.

Boys varsity soccer has been interrupted by the rain since returning, but was able to sneak in a match against Nordhoff. The TVL league opener for both teams was as back-and-forth affair from the opening whistle. The Rams were able to equalize at 3-3 late on Juan Magalhães ’17 penalty kick, only to have the Rams penalized a few minutes later. Cullen Barber ’19 came up with a huge save on the PK, forcing the shot wide into the post. The Rams forced overtime only to be overcome by the Rangers two minutes into the first extra time period. It was a tough overtime loss for the squad, and they ended up having to wait until Friday to play again. The team will travel to Fillmore tonight, with the crosstown showdown against Carpinteria postponed until Monday at 3:15 p.m. That match, originally scheduled for Carpinteria Stadium will now be played at home.

The girls soccer team slogged its way through a tough match against Nordhoff on a sloppy rain soaked pitch on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams were able to take the lead early, behind goals from Neema Mugofwa ’20, who notched the first goal of her Cate career. The Rams added a second score off of a Julia Farner ’18 corner kick which Sophie Johnson ’18 deposited in the back of the net a few minutes later. Unfortunately, the Rams could not hold the 2-1 lead as Nordhoff tied the match in the 50th minute and added two goals late in the match for a 4-2 victory. The girls were rained out yesterday, but head to Ojai this afternoon to take on the Toads, followed by a Saturday match with Carpinteria tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. here on the Mesa.

Girls basketball notched its first league win of the season yesterday with a convincing victory over Villanova Prep, 44-30. Following two tough losses to league leaders Fillmore and Grace Brethren, the Rams were able to top the Wildcats behind a balanced offensive attack. Co-captains Morgan Prinz ’17 and Amber Thierry ’17 have become the on-court and off-court leaders for the team. Both girls contributed clutch minutes last night and kept Villanova from mounting any type of comeback during the second half. The team gets right back into it on Tuesday when they travel to Malibu for a 6 p.m. contest.

The boys basketball team picked up a win over #13 Thacher to kick off the New Year in style. The Rams were paced by an outstanding performance from Mason Mackall ’17. The center scored double digit points, grabbed double digit rebounds, and led the team in blocks and assists for an extremely impressive stat line. The team, currently ranked #9 in Division 6 traveled to Ventura College to face #4 Foothill Tech on Tuesday night. The Rams were again led by Mackall and Marko Pliso ’18 who led the team in scoring with ten and sixteen points respectively. The Rams dropped a tough one to the Dragons to move to 1-1 in Frontier League play. The Rams have three losses on the season and they are all to ranked opponents. The team tips-off at 6 p.m. tonight when they host Fillmore for a league contest.

The squash team will return to action next week as they head to UCLA for the Santa Barbara School of Squash Bronze Tournament from Friday 20-22.
