Boys Varsity Basketball vs Foothill Tech

January 13, 2017

The Cate boys varsity basketball team traveled south to Ventura to take on Foothill Tech on Wednesday, January 12. The two teams traded runs in an up-and-down contest that saw the host Dragons defeat Cate 61-50.

The Rams came out to a slow start and got in early foul trouble. Marko Pliso ’18 got two quick fouls in the first quarter, which sat him the entire first half. Foothill Tech was on fire and hit six 3s in the first half. At the half Cate was down 32-16.

“Our goal at halftime as discussed was to get get consecutive stops and convert,” said Cate Head Coach Andy Gil.

The halftime talk worked; at the end of the third quarter, Cate trailed by just one thanks to hot shooting from Pliso ’18 and Mason Mackall ’17 who each had eleven and eight in the quarter.

To start the fourth and final frame, Cate took its first lead of the game on a driving layup by Mackall ’17. Foothill Tech then responded with back-to-back three-pointers and it was too much for Cate to bounce back. The two sides exchanged baskets the rest of the way, which sunk the Rams.

Cate struggled from the free throw line making only nine of twenty-three attemps. Pliso ’18 finished with sixteen points, while Mackall ’17 tacked on seventeen points and eight rebounds.

Cate is now 5-3 (1-1) and hosts a league contest against Fillmore on Friday, January 13 at 6:30 p.m.
