Boys JV Basketball vs. Bishop Diego

December 14, 2016

The Cate boys JV basketball team won its second game of the season with a furious second-half comeback, defeating the Bishop Diego Cardinals 44–35 on Friday, December 9. After a slow defensive start that gave Bishop a 17–7 first quarter lead, Cate won the second quarter 9-8 and remained competitive thanks to Ethan Cassulo’s ’19 drives, a McCarthy Willett ’19 three-pointer and the inside play of Carson Williams ’19 and Jake Nelson ’19, yet still trailed 25–16 at the half.

After halftime, the team re-committed to playing defense and used full-court pressure to disrupt the Bishop team, quickly tying the score at 27 and ending the quarter with a 20–4 run to turn a ten point deficit into a 36–29 lead.

Sebastian Richardson ’19 keyed the third quarter burst with 8 points on several amazing steals, nice drives and outside shots, including one for the highlight reel, and finished with twelve points. Williams ’19 was a beast of the boards, hauling down many rebounds, disrupting shots, and scoring on several power moves while finishing with thirteen points. Cassulo ’19 controlled the game tempo and scored eight points, and Nelson ’19 had a second strong game with six points and numerous rebounds. Willett ’19 added five points while Scott Holmes ’20, Ethan Ha ’20, and Simon Burke ’20 made key contributions in a hard fought physical game.

The team record is 2-0 and will play after the Winter Break on Friday, January 6 against Thacher. That game will be at Cate and will tip off at 4:30 p.m.
